I'm having some deep thoughts about the Oneness Movement,
where they pay thousands of dollars(US$)(5600 actually) for a 21 day period receiving a supposedly brain changing gift...a lot like shaktipat...If any of you know about Sri Ramakrishna, he received shaktipat from a wandering Advaitan(Pure, Shankara Advaitan) got stuck in a state of bliss...after going past the image(in hinduism we have god with form and without) yet still retaining a connection to a divine mother(Kali devi)...
Shakti of course means creative energy(i.e Shiva-shakti...shiva is the ultimate, shakti is his consort the creative aspect-parvati, kali, durga)...
how does all this relate to the Movement? to the Blessing?
look, if one just thinks they can go and pay lots of money and get enlightened, please, don't even bother!!!
It's something instant, a shock, but after acknowledging a well trained mind on the behalf of the receiver...(Funnily enough Totapura the advaitan got such a shock, not all was illusion the divine mother exists! He had his own samadhi-blissful state)
I admit the movement does do good things(look at the one hundred villages project) but, this is done by ripping off westerners!

Help

I've never looked into TM, but I live near the TM community in Fairfield IA. I visited the town a few years ago and the campus was pretty run down. Whatever they do with the money, it doesn't go into fixing up the buildings and landscaping. :)
oops,
i meant TM as in trademark, I thought I was supposed to add that into their name for copyright etc…(It’s actually just the Oneness Movement)
Truly, Transcendental meditation is a similar case, hundreds of dollars just to learn some meditation techniques…you might as well invent your own version!
oops on me. I wasn't reading carefully enough and my brain is a bit sleepy.
BTW the kind of shaktipat I like is good 'ol holy spirit power. A palm whacked to your forehead… and *Praise the Lord* you're healed. I'm not sure how much it costs though. :)
I just cancelled the tms now…
Yes!!! when you realise it, they're the same thing…
When you come to looking into whether they actually work or not, I think
most are frauds…but there should be a few genuine ones: here's an interesting one from Suketu Mehta's 'Maximum City Bombay lost and found'…a hindu supremacist who killed muslims in the riots had a really sick daughter and took her to a Muslim healer, he held a bottle of water out while walking around the girl and each time you'd see the water drop inside the bottle…
In Mauritius(my personal background), it was called pass…healers would pass their hands over the wounds, healing them, and you'd see the wound gone…but then you'd ask is it because I feel I'm going to be healed(some would talk of placebo effect), or that the person actually healed me…
does my mind transcend my body, or does my body limit my mind?
There are some things I think science is far from understanding, far from even knowing how to try to understand. The scientific understanding of the placebo effect(along with spiritual/energy healing and prayer) is one of those things that will be a long time coming. And it cuts to the core of the whole scientific endeavor. Placebos and so-caled 'control groups' are absolutely essential to science. Science has to use 'controls' to measure by but it doesn't control the 'controls'.
“but then you'd ask is it because I feel I'm going to be healed(some would talk of placebo effect), or that the person actually healed me…”
Maybe its both. Maybe the placebo effect goes beyond our belief that we're separate individuals. There has been some research on prayer that has shown positive results. So, maybe not only our own beliefs effect us but also the beliefs of others. If you're interested in this kind of thing, then check out Lynne McTaggart.
